WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Terrifics #28, by Gene Luen Yang, Sergio Davila, Vicente Cifuentes, Protobunker and Tom Napolitano, on sale now.
The Terrifics #28 forces the team to face one of the strongest villains in the DC Universe: Parasite.
This energy-absorbing legacy villain first appeared in 1966 and was created by Jim Shooter. Although he's since gained a new origin story as a result of Crisis and The New 52, his power base remains the same. Absorbing energy allows him to get stronger and grow to immense size. In each instance, though, Parasite's power is dependent upon him absorbing energy. That lets him get stronger and grow to immense size -- but unfortunately, it also has its pitfalls.
In The Terrifics #28, a group of young people head to the TerrificTech Modern Community Association seminar at Gateway City. There, Mr. Terrific has gathered the Terrifics and the T-Council, some of smartest and most-capable people in the entire DC Universe, including Man-Bat, Tom Strong, Phantom Girl, Tesla Strong, Plastic Man and Blue Beetle (not Ted Kord). Needless to say, it's an eclectic group.
The team tours the TerrificTech Vertical Farm, a tall shaft of greenspace built underneath Gateway City and illuminated by an artificial baby sun. It's as much a farm as it is a lab, with experimental vegetables growing everywhere. That includes a patch carrots that have been modified to be just smart enough to harvest themselves.
When Mr. Terrific suggests using the carrots for a lunchtime stew, Phantom Girl and Tesla Strong nearly revolt and are revolted, respectively. Luckily, Plastic Man lightens the mood by suggesting Thai food.
Before they can order their Pad Nor Mai, however, the team encounters Josh Allen, a man claiming to work at the facility. One of the T-Spheres quickly runs a background check and reveals "Josh Allen" is lying. Unmasked, Allen reveals himself to be Parasite. He's there to eat the sun.
With the heroes caught on their heels, Parasite quickly gains the upper hand. However, Mr. Terrific is the third-smartest man on the planet and he has something Parasite wasn't banking on: Carrots.
The pseudo-intelligent carrots being grown in the greenspace are really efficient at photosynthesis. By exposing the sun-powered Parasite to the carrots, Mr. Terrific is able to drain all of Parasite's powers, leaving the bad guy completely at the heroes' mercy. It's a silly ending, but an effective one.
