Asparagus beginning to be grown in the fields of Alcalá la Real - FreshPlaza.com

The diversification of the agricultural production in the Jaen region of Sierra Sur, traditionally devoted to the cultivation of olive trees, has resulted in asparagus being introduced in the fields of Alcalá la Real. One of the two companies that have chosen to grow this vegetable in the municipality is Espárragos Alcalá la Real S.L., which has achieved satisfactory results in its first year of activity, with a harvest of 417,000 kilos.

"The most stimulating aspect, in addition to the good figures in the areas of production and distribution, is the employment generated in this first year of activity: 60 jobs, mostly for women, and the total number will probably increase next season," said the Councilor for Economic Development and Agriculture, Miguel Sánchez-Cañete. In addition to these direct jobs, some 200 indirect jobs are also generated for the crop's harvest, which takes place between the months of February and June.

The City Council supported the project of José Luis Golbano, which months later consolidated under the Alcalá la Real Golbano and Royal Alcalá brands. Both white and green asparagus are marketed in the domestic and the international markets. The firm is considering the possibility of working with tropical fruit as well, so that jobs can be maintained beyond the asparagus season.

“We are convinced that we must support entrepreneurship in the agro-food sector, given its obvious potential for job creation. It is an ideal complement for our producers, as the products are sold in select destinations like France, Switzerland or Germany, so good prices can be maintained,” said the councillor.
