Broccoli is a brilliantly versatile vegetable and there are so many amazing broccoli recipes out there. It’s great roasted, boiled, steamed, grilled and even stir-fried. And you just can't argue with a broccoli soup, can you?
Whether you’re having it as a side for your roast dinner or as part of a pasta dish, broccoli is dead easy to cook. So, here are a few ways to cook broccoli that’ll work a treat.
How to boil broccoli
One of the simplest ways to cook broccoli is to boil it. All you have to do for this cooking method is to fill a saucepan with boiling water from the kettle and place the pan over a high heat. After you’ve cut your broccoli into bite-sized florets, simply pop them into the boiling water carefully and allow to cook for 5–6 minutes.
Check if they’re done by sticking a knife into the stem of one of the florets. It should go in fairly easily. If it doesn’t, the broccoli probably needs another couple of minutes. Before serving, drain the florets in a sieve or colander.
How to steam broccoli
Steaming broccoli is a brilliant way of keeping all that tasty broccoli flavour. All you have to do is place the florets in a steamer over boiling water. Cook them for 5-6 minutes. Again, check if they’re cooked with a knife. Continue to steam if the stem still feels hard.
How to stir-fry broccoli
If you’re looking to stir-fry your broccoli, heat 1 tbsp of oil in a frying pan over a medium-high heat. Add the florets, and cook for 4-5 minutes; stirring continuously. And why not add crushed garlic, lime zest or spices to bring your broccoli to life a little more?
How to roast broccoli
If you’re having a Sunday roast, why not include roasted broccoli as one of your veggies? Simply pre-heat your oven to 180°C fan. Spread your broccoli florets on a baking tray, and drizzle with a little olive oil. Season with salt and pepper and pop them in the oven for 20 minutes. Check them after 15 minutes to make sure they’re not catching. Again, you can jazz up your roasted broccoli by adding lemon zest or dried chilli flakes before popping them in the oven.
How to cook tender-stem broccoli
The great thing about tender-stem is not only does it make you look super-sophisticated if you serve it at a dinner party, but it’s also dead easy to cook, because you can cook it in all the same ways as regular broccoli.
But, if you’re looking for even more of a wow factor at your next shindig, try griddling it. Simply place a griddle pan over a high heat before placing your tender-stem broccoli into the pan. Turn the broccoli every so often so you get nice griddle marks without it getting burnt. This should take around 6-8 minutes.
