No carrots in carrot cake? No buffalo in buffalo wings? | Columns - Daily American Online

This year of 2020 has been full of pandemics, disasters and anything else that can go wrong. But on the other hand, it has been a beautiful summer, a little hot and humid, but a beautiful summer.

The other day while driving, I was listening to the radio and the on-air personality was telling about a woman who was suing Hostess because their carrot cakes had no carrots. Really, with everything going on in the world this person is concerned that a snack carrot cake has no carrots?

What will be next — will someone sue the maker of buffalo wings because there is no buffalo in them?

I do think food names and labels can be deceiving. I have been upset for years over products labeled milk that can not possibly be milk. Almonds, coconuts and other products like these do not have a mammary system and should not be allowed to call themselves milk.

Milk is nature’s most perfect food and except for those who have allergies to milk, it should be enjoyed by one and all. Nothing is more refreshing on these hot and humid days than the taste of delicious ice cream. I hope you are enjoying milk, ice cream, cheese and yogurt during these summer months.

Fake milk cuts into the sales of real dairy products and hurts our dairy farmers.

Now not only are consumers being mislead on what is really milk, we now are dealing with plant-based products passing themselves off as meat. Morning Star has had plant-based products for years and last year Burger King brought on the market their Impossible Burger.

What is wrong with eating food the way nature gives it to us? Why do we have a need to process something into a type of food it was not meant to be? A hamburger is a natural product of beef cattle. The Impossible Burger is processed from plants and chemicals.

In the summer, farmers take time between making hay and other projects to talk to our legislators. This year’s Somerset County Farm Bureau had its annual farm legislative tour at the Harold Shaulis farm. The Shaulis farm is being rented by a company in South Carolina to grow kale and other organic produce. This same company is growing produce on farms in Stoneycreek Township too.

It is great to see agriculture being diversified in Somerset County. As in many occupations, agriculture needs to keep rediscovering itself while at the same time improving the ways of traditional farming too.

In closing, you may remember in my July article I wrote about rural stress and the concern in the rise of farmers committing suicide across the country. I was pleased to be asked to be part of a program taped by RFD-TV for their Rural America Live Show. I was just a small part of the program speaking as a pastor and farmer in rural America.

The program has moving stories and great speakers from across the country including: Zippy DuVall, president of American Farm Bureau; Dr. John Shutske, professor and Extension specialist with the University of Wisconsin; Dr. Courtney Cuthbertson, assistant professor, Human Development and Family Studies with the University of Illinois; and Matt Rush, inspirational speaker and farmer. The program will be aired at 10 p.m. Aug. 27, on RFD-TV and at the same time on Sirius XM Channel 147.
