The area devoted to producing okra in southern Honduras has increased to 3,000 hectares. According to the leader of okra growers, Rony Mendez, "more small producers are starting to produce okra in this area of the country because the climate here is almost perfect for expanding okra production."
"Previously, okra was only harvested from November to April, but with the new genetics and new field strategies, its cultivation has already been extended to the other months of the year," he added.
Markets
Honduran okra competes and disputes the US market with the okra from the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua Mendez stated, highlighting that more than 70% of this vegetable is exported to the United States; 20% to Europe and the rest to Canada, while local consumption is very low.
He also said that they were carrying out tests in the Comayagua valley sowing American okra, which was evolving well, as the climate of the center of the country favored it a lot.
"Another factor that benefits okra is the rain schedule, so we should take advantage of that situation," the businessman said.
"This vegetable generates 10,000 to 13,000 daily jobs throughout the year in the southern part of the country. There are large companies, small and medium producers, and peasant organizations producing it," he said.
