Beef and broccoli is a combination that works extremely well together. It’s a combination that provides a great balance between the flavors, as well as looking aesthetically pleasing.
There are some traditional ways to cook this dish while there are other alternative ways to cook it and it is up to you to try and explore the different methods that will suit your time, effort, and taste.
Stir Fry
The most commonly associated style to cook beef and broccoli is that of stir fry. Stir-fried beef and broccoli is a staple of Asian cuisine, traditionally cooked in a wok, but you are able to use a large frying pan if you don’t have a wok handy. In your wok or frying pan, cook your cut broccoli in oil with garlic, ginger, and onions until they soften and are tender. You also want the onions to caramelize in the frying pan. Once the broccoli is cooked, remove from the pan for later, and cook the beef with oyster sauce, or substitute with soy sauce, teriyaki sauce or one with your preference. Thin beef slices are optimal cooking as they cook fast and thoroughly without drying out, and are flavorful and easy to eat. Once cooked, add in the broccoli to mix together. You are ready to serve.
Seared Beef Steak And Roasted Vegetables
Another way to cook beef and broccoli is by pan-frying beef steaks and roasting vegetables. In a pan, sear your steaks with butter, lightly seasoning with salt and pepper. Cook to your preference from rare to well done. With your vegetables, you can roast them in a pan covered in tin foil to ensure even roasting. You don’t have to use only one vegetable either. Creating a medley using broccoli, carrots, potatoes, and onions will provide you a ton of flavor to your dish.
Instant Pot Beef And Broccoli
Instant pot, or one pot, beef, and broccoli is an alternative method that will result in a similar taste and flavor of the stir-fried dish. The only difference is that this recipe doesn’t require the use of multiple dishes, pots, and pans. Instead, all the ingredients will be put in the same pot, making the meal preparation and cleaning up much easier.
Again, sliced beef is preferred but you can choose how you cut up your meat. Together with the seasoning and sauces, you put them all in the pot, close the lid and cook at high pressure. Cook between 10-12 minutes, depending on the thickness of the beef. Once that is done, add the beef and stir it together, cooking it again for another 2 minutes. Once this is done, you are ready to eat, and with very little to tidy up.
Made With Chow Mein Noodles
A lot of beef and broccoli dishes are made to eat with some sort of carbs. Traditional beef and broccoli can be served with plain rice if you are not looking to do anything fancy, fried rice, or noodles. Noodles provide a more Asian feel to tie the whole dish together. Chow mein noodles can be made with as many extra ingredients as you’d like in terms of vegetables. Similar to stir fry, you will cook your protein, then add the vegetables. But before everything cooks, you’ll add in your noodles that have been soaked or boiled in water prior to soften them up first. This mixture of noodles gives you a balanced way to enjoy beef and broccoli. And with the inclusion of additional vegetables, this dish offers various nutrients and vitamins.
Ground Beef Fried Rice With Steamed Broccoli
If you are looking for another method to cook your beef, using ground beef to make fried rice will give you a similar taste, but with a different method and texture. If you’ve got some leftover rice, that is perfect to use. Newly cooked rice holds too much moisture whereas old rice holds up a little better with the sauce in the stirfry. With some soy sauce, garlic, and onions, cook your ground beef. Once this is done, add in the rice and mix thoroughly. Cook and add some scrambled eggs for both color and flavor, and top with some steamed broccoli. And there you have it, another alternative way to make beef and broccoli.
The great thing about all these dishes is that no matter how you cook them, the taste will always be flavorful thanks to the balance and complementary ingredients you use. Provide your guests or even just your own taste buds something new to eat and give these recipes a try. And don’t be afraid to change the recipe and make it your own with other proteins, vegetables, seasonings, and sauces.
