Hyderabad: Thanks to a good monsoon and abundant rainfall, the prices of vegetables which remained high for last several weeks in the city have started to come down.
On Sunday, the prices on essential vegetables including tomatoes, green chillies, cabbage, cauliflower, onion, lady fingers and cucumber in the rythu bazaars of the city registered a sharp dip when compared to earlier weeks.
If a kilogram of tomatoes at rythu bazaar were sold at Rs 28 last Sunday, the price today came down to Rs 16 per kg while the green chillies came at Rs 30 per kg today as against last Sunday’s Rs 40.
While these being the pricing at rythu bazaar, In super markets and local stores, tomatoes were sold anywhere between Rs 45 to Rs 60 per kg last week. Given the adequate arrival of vegetables in the city markets, the prices in these stores too are expected to drop sharply.
According to market committee authorities, kharif crops which were sown since the beginning of the first rains in the wake of Southwest Monsoon resulted in adequate arrivals in vegetable markets.
Ramesh, Estate Officer, Erragadda Model Rythu Bazaar, said vegetable prices would come down further in the coming days as markets in the city would witness more arrivals till the end of monsoon. However, incessant rains for three to four days could cause damage to crops and impact the supplies, he added.
“Vegetable arrivals in Erragadda now have gone up compared to previous weeks. Earlier, we used to receive around 1,000 quintals of vegetables, which now shot up to 1,500 quintals a day,” Ramesh said.
Farmers too are expectant of their profits increasing a bit with the supplies. “We had a dull business in July due to a spike in Covid-19 cases. We hope our income improves with the drop in vegetable prices,” said J Shekar, a farmer selling his produce at rythu bazaar.
Hyderabad mainly receives vegetables from parts of Rangareddy, Medchal, Medak, Chevella, Vikarabad and other neighbourhood parts.
Precautionary measures
According to officials, rythu bazaars have been coordinating with Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to ensure proper hygiene and sanitisation in the market premises.
Garbage and trash accumulated in the market is being cleared on a daily basis while flooring and pathways are disinfected once a week, officials said adding that foot operated sanitiser stand is provided for both farmers and buyers in Erragadda. Efforts were continuing by market committee officials to ensure physical distance and that both sellers and buyers use masks.
Meanwhile, the mobile Rythu bazaars which were started in April would continue to distribute vegetables to colonies. The marketing department has arranged around 150 mobile bazaars through 11 rythu bazaars across the city and which are despatched to colonies that are located far from vegetable markets.
