It’s being postponed, but not due to coronavirus. The annual potato picking at Carstens 1880 Farmstead in Avoca wasn’t held Sept. 12, due to recent rainfall and if you still want to participate, it’s coming up Saturday, Sept. 19.
In June, officials said that the annual Farm Days would not be held this year, but set the potato harvest for Sept. 12. Then much needed rain made the fields too wet for digging the potatoes, so the date was changed.
“Weather permitting, we’ll be digging potatoes on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.,” officials said on the Carstens webpage.
Those who are interested are encouraged to bring their own buckets — and sense of humor — to pick their own potatoes. For those who are unable to pick potatoes themselves, there will be some available on a wagon.
Free will donations to Carstens Farm will be accepted, and will be used to help maintain the farm.
Carstens Board of Directors President Mel Hursey said there is a bumper crop of potatoes this year, and officials welcomed potato pickers, encouraging them to maintain a safe social distance.
Attendees of Carstens annual Farm Days may already know that the farm grows a large crop of flavorful potatoes each year, and invites the public to share in the harvest.
Carstens Board of Directors President Mel Hursey says that the farm’s gate will be open to the public from 10 am – 4 pm on Saturday, September 19. Potatoes will be on the ground and on a trailer as in past years. Hursey said “The rain has been good to get but it is too muddy in the potato patch now. We’re postponing the potato digging until we’re able to take a tractor and potato digger through without getting stuck.”
