New Research Encourages Women To Eat More Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts And Cabbage - Forbes

How often do you put cruciferous vegetables—specifically broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage—in your basket at the market?

New research from an observational study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, found a link between higher consumption of these vegetables with less extensive blood vessel disease in women.

Researchers from Edith Cowan University’s School of Medical and Health Sciences and The University of Western Australia published their findings after analyzing data from a cohort of 684 older women in 1998.

Lead researcher Dr. Lauren Blekkenhorst said previous studies had shown that a higher intake of cruciferous vegetables contributed to a reduced risk of a cardiovascular disease event, such as heart attack or stroke. But they really weren’t sure why.

“Our findings from this new study provides insight into the potential mechanisms involved,” she said. “We have now found that older women consuming higher amounts of cruciferous vegetables every day have lower odds of having extensive calcification on their aorta.”

Since vitamin K is found abundantly in cruciferous vegetables, the researchers surmise it may be involved in inhibiting the calcification process in blood vessels.

You may be asking how much you should be eating every day.

Dr. Blekkenhorst says women in the study who consumed more than 45g of cruciferious vegetables daily (for example 1/4 cup or steamed broccoli or 1/2 cup raw cabbage) were 46-percent less likely to have extensive calcium build-up on their aorta than those not eating the higher amount.

"That's not to say the only vegetables we should be eating are broccoli, cabbage and Brussels sprouts,” she said. “We should be eating a wide variety of vegetables every day for overall good health and wellbeing."

The American Heart Association recommends eating four and a half cups of vegetables and fruits every day.
