The worst of the heatwaves in Europe seems to be over now. But their impact on fruit and vegetable production is becoming increasingly apparent. "We need to make up shortfalls throughout Europe. Especially for full soil products. It's evident in, particularly, cauliflower and broccoli," says Leon van den Hombergh of Frankort & Koning, in the Netherlands.
Most of the crops in Almeria, Spain, still have some growing to do.
"In Europe, for other products too, demand is currently higher than supply. These include courgettes and aubergines. As long as Almeria hasn't quite started, the situation won't change any time soon, either. Our regular producers in southern Spain are gradually getting going. But, their production will only really be up and running by the end of September. So, each period has its challenges. We'll just say, 'never a dull moment," says Leon.
