Crops that are worth trying include: onion, radish, broccoli, cabbage, kohlrabi, spinach, lettuce and kale.
A general rule of thumb for fall vegetable seeding is to seed deeper and denser than in spring. Increase all depths and densities by 25 to 50 per cent.
For example, onions, radish, kohlrabi, lettuce and spinach should be seeded 1 cm deep with 1 cm spacing between seeds. Broccoli and cabbage should be seeded 1 cm deep with 15 cm between seeds. Seed kale 1 cm deep with 1.5 cm between seeds. Carrot and beet germination can be low and therefore should be seeded at a rate of 2-3 seeds/cm.
Be prepared to thin all seedlings in spring if germination is high, so that plants are spaced appropriately for excellent growth and maturity.
The theory behind fall seeding vegetables is that the seed is put in place in the fall where it will remain dormant until spring moisture and warmth initiate seed germination. Vegetable seeds should NOT germinate in fall. Fall seeded vegetables should be seeded as late in the fall season as possible, just prior to soil freeze-up.
