This week on The Masked Singer, Broccoli confused a lot of people. But we think we know which celebrity is hiding in this green veggie costume.
Broccoli appeared with group C for the first time on The Masked Singer, performing "House is Rockin'/Whole Lotta Shakin Going On" by Stevie Ray Vaughan/ Jerry Lee Lewis. The judges' guesses included Caddyshack star Bill Murray, Howie Mandel from America's Got Talent, and even Police Academy actor Steve Guttenberg. A popular fan guess repeated by other publications is actor and writer Kevin Smith. Earlier, the clues had many thinking Broccoli was a young celebrity, but his performance was that of an older, more seasoned performer. While the show has had several older female legendary singers we think Broccoli may be an older, iconic male: Paul Anka.
One of the first clues for Broccoli came in the sneak peek episode, when he said "I'm a broccolean mean heart-pumping machine, that's how I got my six-pack." This, along with the letterman jacket that is part of the costume, lead many to think the celebrity is an athlete, or at least someone younger. However, fans of Anka know he's in great shape at 79, which he attributes to a healthy lifestyle and staying physically fit. Another clue that might mistakenly make you think of a younger star was the TikTok clue. Users of the app know that a COVID version of Anka's hit "Put Your Head On His Shoulder" made its way around social media and lead to a revival of sorts for the original. At this time, there are over 64k TikTok videos using a modern remix of the song, which you can hear in the video below:
One of the first visual clues for Broccoli, a can of soup, is possibly the most convincing of all. Anka's biography tells a story of how his dream to become a singer was solidified when he won a trip to New York through a Campbell's soup contest. To win the contest, he spent three months collecting soup can labels. In addition to the soup can, Broccoli said a contest greased the wheels for his career. The dogs shown were most likely a nod to his song "Puppy Love," though fans of Gilmore Girls will remember the show's leads had a dog named Paul Anka.
Broccoli spoke of the difficulty of being a kid rolling with the OGs. When he got his start as a teen, Anka performed and toured with many big names in the industry. There was a mariachi band in the clue package and many may not realize that the song "A Mi Manera," popular among mariachi bands, was, in fact, written by Anka in 1969. He also said singing was his passion and he had been on many stages. But as usual, the biggest clue of all is the voice. Anka, who is still touring and performing, sounds just like Broccoli. Sorry Kevin Smith fans, Broccoli is Paul Anka.
