Crop Systems Limited is the UK’s premiere manufacturer and installer of potato and vegetable stores. In the past 25 years the company has built an enviable reputation for combining innovative thinking with outstanding engineering and products. Over that time it has developed a series of innovative systems, each of which has set new standards for the potato and vegetable storage industries.

The company operates from a purpose-designed 15,500 square foot factory at Happisburgh, Norfolk in the UK. Managing Director, Ray Andrews designed the country’s first ‘WarmStor‘, gaining the prestigious Marks and Spencer’s Innovation Award cutting the client’s energy usage by 72% in its first full year of operation.

Crop System’s latest technology innovation – the SmartStor – enables operators to monitor and manage stores remotely, while reducing crop storage costs, so they have complete control and complete peace of mind.

Says Ray Andrews: “The SmartStor enables store operators to monitor and manage any number of either box or bulk stores from their mobile device. It can be used with all makes of store – whether from Crops Systems Ltd or not. And an operator has full control from a phone, tablet or PC.”

Andrews points out that the system sends alerts to multiple devices if any aspect of store management goes outside pre-selected parameters. It also issues daily performance reports and includes a CO2 accumulator, which monitors store air quality. Simple settings give automatic control over multi fanspeed periods. The system features a preapplication setting with a ‘Co2 Purge’ option.

The ‘Lone Worker’ protection feature is operated via a ‘swipe card’ entry, with alerts being sent to devices and sounding at the store if the worker fails to log out within a certain period of time.

According to Andrews, the SmartStor system optimises applications costs, especially in view of the fact that mint oil is an expensive option to CIPC for sprout control in long-term storages. SmartStor also enables ethylene shutdown with ambient cooling and purging.

The SmartStor system comes with ‘heat-pump air mixing warming and drying‘ functions, and enables ‘peak tariff‘ shutdown, as well as 3-level energy periods.

“These are just some of the things you can do with Smart Control,” says Andrews. “The SmartStor technology fits any store, and it can indeed be regarded as the potato store in your pocket‘,” Andrews says.
