Shakey’s Pizza is jumping on two dining trends in one swoop: ghost kitchens and chicken sandwiches.
The Alhambra-based casual restaurant chain has set up an online brand called Mojos& that is initially available in parts of Los Angeles County.
And it serves a new chicken sandwich and one of Shakey’s favorites, Mojo Potatoes.
The sandwich, called the Big Clucker, is a lot like the one launched by Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen that set off a feeding frenzy in the summer of 2019. It costs $6.99 and features white meat tenders with pickles and mayonnaise on a brioche bun.
Mojos are seasoned, lightly battered potato slices. They are one of the signature menu items for Shakey’s, which was founded in 1954.
Mojos& serves the potatoes, fried chicken and Big Cluckers in various combinations ranging from $3.99 for one snack to $42.99, which includes 16 pieces of chicken, 2 pounds of mojos, and dipping sauces.
In a news release, Nick Mayer, Shakey’s chief operating officer Nick Mayer said Mojos& expands the chain beyond its dine-in experience and keeps team members employed.
Mojos& is what is called a virtual kitchen, or ghost kitchen. Such brands exist for deliveries of online orders and most don’t have space for diners.
Ghost kitchens were already a trend when the novel coronavirus pandemic hit, but restaurants’ inability to serve dine-in customers speeded it up. At least two Southern California chains, Dog Haus and Lazy Dog Restaurant, launched ghost kitchens in 2020.
Shakey’s is currently using its own kitchens to serve nearby neighborhoods at seven locations: East Los Angeles, Culver City, Mid-Wilshire, Inglewood, Carson, Alhambra and North Hollywood. If the brand is successful, it might expand to other kitchens.
Delivery is by DoorDash.
