Hopefully you’ve seen it by now, because it’s exquisite: the Zoom call between a Texas judge and a handful of lawyers, in which one of the counselors accidentally deploys a screen filter which turns his lawyer face into the face of a…cat.
“Can you hear me, Judge?” the attorney mewls, as he realizes he’s being shown on screen as a wide-eyed, tabby kitten.
“I don’t know how to remove it…I’ve got my assistant here, and she’s trying to…”
The other people on the call seem mystified, then amused. Then, plaintively, the cat lawyer offers the Best Quote of 2021 thus far: “I…I’m not a cat.”
Cat Lawyer was a magical bit of viral theater, comic relief from serious headlines, but also a fairly perfect rendering of modern life: increasingly virtual, often at home, forever in danger of complication from technology, noisy children, real-life cats or other disasters.
