Up and down each aisle of my local ShopRite supermarket I went, writes Andrew Ostrowski in this column published in Am-Pol Eagle. Reaching the fruits and vegetables aisle, I noticed that on my shopping list, in addition to the apples, oranges, peaches, carrots, lettuce, and celery I jotted down, potatoes were there too. Since I favor the Yukon Gold variety being that they are easy to cut up, boil fast, and eat with the skins left on, I spotted to my astonishment a supply of them from…Swaz Potato Farms! Shaking my head in disbelief, could it be true?
Yes, it was. Bottom of the bag credits went to Szawlowski Packers of Hatfield, MA. It all started in May of 1902 when John Szawlowski arrived on Ellis Island seeking the American Dream as so many of our early immigrants did. Eight years later, he began a farming business in Northampton, MA focusing on one crop, potatoes.
Today, Szawlowski Potato Farms, Inc. is the largest potato grower in Massachusetts. The family’s potato fields span the Connecticut River Valley, the home of New England’s longest river hallmarked by some of the richest soil on earth.
