North Carolina Potato Harvest Nears Takeoff - Southeast Produce Weekly

North Carolina’s fresh potato harvest is poised to ramp up beginning around June 18, and growers say they expect a good crop.

The season was “on the edge of dry,” but the crop responded well to timely rain, said Reuben James, owner of potato grower-shipper James Bros. Inc., a multigenerational family farm in Pasquotank County, N.C.

James Bros. grows yellow, white and red potatoes on 300 acres, shipping totes and 50-puind bags to both retailers and repackers throughout the Eastern U.S. and into Canada under the Riverview brand, James said.

On June 8, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s first report for the 2021 North Carolina potato season said most producers in North Carolina’s Elizabeth City District estimate the harvest will begin the week ending June 19.

While USDA had not reported f.o.b. prices from the Elizabeth City District as of June 8, movement out of Florida was expected to decrease, with trading moderate.

Florida prices for Round Red were higher, Yellow size A lower and others generally unchanged.

  • Round Red U.S. One 50-pound cartons size A mostly $14.70, size B mostly $22.70, 50-pound sacks size A mostly $12.95, size B mostly $20.95.
  • Yellow Type U.S. One 50-pound cartons size A mostly $20.70, size B mostly $14.25-17.70, 50-pound sacks size A mostly $18.95, size B mostly $12.50-15.95.
Potatoes are a good source of vitamin C.

The North Carolina potato season runs from the middle of June through most of July, directly following the potato harvest out of north Florida.

North Carolina-grown fresh “new” potatoes never spend time in a storage shed, shipping fresh to market at the perfect time for baked potatoes and other summertime grilling favorites.

North Carolina potatoes’ seasonal window fills a market opening when storage potatoes begin to run fairly short and quality is not as strong, North Carolina Potato Association Adviser Tommy Fleetwood said.

The North Carolina Potato Association says that new potatoes with bright skins are looked forward to by consumers.

The Elizabeth City-based potato association promotes North Carolina potatoes as:

  • Your Summer Potatoes
  • Summer’s Best
  • and Everyday … In Every Way.

The North Carolina Potato Association is the first commodity association formed in North Carolina, founded In 1928 by a group of potato farmers in the state’s northeastern coastal regions.
